AFFIRMATION OF THE WEEK

I am a winner.

WHAT’S THE GAME PLAN?
Why You Need to Chase the Game, Not the Bag

I came across a clip on Instagram of Deion Sanders talking about one of the biggest mistakes he sees young athletes make:

They chase the bag instead of chasing the game.

He said:
“The first mistake they make is chasing the bag instead of chasing the game.
"Chase the game.”
“The game has the bag. Don’t chase the bag. The bag doesn’t have the game.”

At first I was like, c’mon, aren’t we all in it for the bag?
But then I thought about what he meant by it and it made sense.

There are so many times when we are so focused on the reward and the outcome that we forget all that we are capable of becoming when we chase the game.

We want the money, the followers, the recognition, the finish line, all of it. And we forget that if we do “chase the game” the bag will come with it. Yes, we want the bag, but we should really be chasing the game first.

When I heard Deion Sanders say “chase the game”, to me that meant chase the journey.
Because the game is really a journey, and what happens in a journey?

You discover things about yourself, you learn new things, you mess up and try again, you meet people and build relationships, you figure out what works and what doesn't, and… you get better.

Throughout the journey, you learn things about yourself that you wouldn't have learned if somebody just gave you the bag on Day 1.
To me, the journey is about becoming better at your game and becoming a better you.

The journey is about chasing the lessons, the learning opportunities, the relationships, the discipline, all of it.

Deion said:

“Chase the game, because the bag is going to sustain you for a moment. The game is going to maintain you forever.”

“They’re chasing the wrong thing. I’d rather chase a place that’s going to give me the game. That’s going to teach me how to be a man. That’s going to teach me about money. That’s going to hold me accountable. And make sure I’m disciplined. Not just give me the bag.”

“Because that’s going to run out. You’re one or two years in, and you’re not in an environment preparing you for the next level.”

“You’re chasing NIL instead of the NFL. That’s not the right thing. I’ve never chased money in my life.”

“I’ve chased greatness. And guess what came with greatness?”

“The money.”

That’s what the game is about: the journey.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with chasing the bag.
But I think sometimes the bag can be a distraction.
Because it can make you impatient.

You start looking around and asking yourself.
Why am I not there yet? Why hasn't my opportunity come? When is it my turn?

Before you know it, you're comparing your journey to somebody else's results.
And when that happens, you start looking for shortcuts and start questioning your path. You might even quit something that was slowly working simply because it wasn't working fast enough.

That's why it’s important not to let the bag become the only reason you're playing the game. If you're consistently becoming better at your game, the opportunities will find you.

And as for the bag?

The bag is the reward for showing up, it’s the reward for the work, it’s the reward for the journey you went through, it’s the reward for not giving up.

The bag will come.

That’s it. That’s the game plan.
