QUOTE OF THE WEEK
WHAT’S THE GAME PLAN?
The Mind Game: Lessons from DeMar & Dame
Today’s Game Plan is all about mental health, something we all deal with,
even the pros. I recently watched an interview with DeMar DeRozan and Damian Lillard where they spoke about the importance of mental health, being open about struggles, and how to overcome them. I wanted to share some gems with you from that conversation. Here’s the link if you want to watch the full conversation, Dinners w/ DeMar.
Here are 4 mental health reminders from DeMar and Dame ⬇️
1.WE ALL STRUGGLE.
“There’s no shame in having some struggles. There’s no shame in being in a bad place and needing help. We all need it.” - Damian Lillard
Sometimes it feels like we’re the only ones going through something, but we’re not. Everyone has something they’re carrying, even the people who look like they’ve got it all together.
2.YOU CAN’T POUR FROM AN EMPTY CUP.
“You can't pour from an empty cup. When I started talking to a therapist, the number one thing that we focused on was how much I do for people. Like my whole career I always been invested in my teammates. Always been invested in like showing up for the team. I do everything I can for my family.
I always want to be the best version of myself. But I was pouring into all this stuff because that's what's in my heart. But then I wasn't taking care of myself. So if you're not taking care of yourself mentally and physically, it's only going to be so long before you just, you wiped out.
You know, you can't do nothing for other people or support other things if you ain't taking care of yourself.”
- Damian Lillard
You can’t show up for others if you’re running on empty. It’s not selfish to take care of your needs to be the best version of yourself, both for you and others. We can’t give and give until we’ve got nothing left for ourselves. We can’t wait until burnout hits to focus on our mental and physical health.
3.FIND WHAT GROUNDS YOU
“I think music is like a perfect outlet for me because it's like journaling for me. I don't use music as like a be cool experience for me it’s literally like journaling. I'm letting people in on my thoughts and feelings about whatever my current state is.”
-Damian Lillard
Whether it’s music, writing, sports, or meditation, we all have something that helps us stay grounded and present. Whatever that thing is for you,
make time for it more often to stay balanced.
4.YOU’RE HUMAN
“I tell everybody the same thing. Life is going to be life no matter what. It's all right. It's all right to go through the good, the bad, the ugly. And it's all right to express yourself and be vulnerable. You know it's fine.
Like we all need that. We all have emotions. We all human.
And the faster you accept that, the easier it is to be able to have
those necessary conversations with someone you care about.
And everybody's story is unique. And that story help’s out the next person, you know. And that's all we trying to do every single time we get an opportunity to express ourselves or show our vulnerabilities so we could go out there and be great, you know. I don't know one person who got this life thing figured out.
So with that, it's going to be a consistent journey.
And the journey, the reward is in the journey. So accept the journey as it come and know the more you push through and figure it out and help others, the better it's going to be for yourself too.”
- Demar DeRozan
Life isn’t perfect, and none of us have it all figured out. It’s okay to feel all the feelings and to be vulnerable, that’s just part of being human.
That’s it.
That’s the game plan.
Remember, 1% better every day, and small wins are WINS!
